Karl Fredric Putnam was born March 28, 1879, to a prominent family in Mt. Carmel, Illinois–banker and attorney Samuel R. Putnam and Agatha Weinbach Putnam. Chapin Hall was erected on University-owned property in 1901 with funds provided by Dr. O. K. Pearsons. It was named for his sister-in-law, Julia Chapin. Pearsons stipulated that the new dormitory at 726 University Place be put in the charge of the Women's Educational Association (WEAA) to house up to 60 financially disadvantaged women.
